“The most important spiritual growth doesn’t happen when you’re meditating or on a yoga mat……
it happens in the midst of conflict….when you’re frustrated, angry or scared and you’re doing the same old thing, and
you suddenly realise that you do have a choice to do it differently…..”
I’m sure you have heard the saying that the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting to get a different result. Well one of the true beauties of yoga (apart from building deep inner strength, flexibility of mind and body and bringing inner peace and understanding!) is that it creates a pause – in our life, our week, our day, our thinking. In that pause we can make change and this change can lead to growth. We can all find we get caught up in a loop of behaviour, sometimes for years, and whilst we become so frustrated by it we do not take a moment to understand that we can make a change…. We do have a choice to “do it differently”.
Yoga offers us a way of life that can be much more transformational than a 60-minute yoga class once a week…. and this term apart from creating and using the space that yoga gives us to be the change we wish to see, we will also work on our shoulders and hips and weave the philosophy of the Yamas and Niyamas into our practice.
These ways of thinking support us like moral codes guiding us in life and how to interact not only with ourselves but the world around us. These philosophies are thousands of years old, just like yoga, and the first step on the yogic path to self realisation.
There are eight ‘limbs’ to the ancient Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, each describing a different aspect of the yoga practice, and a different step on the ladder to realisation. They are commonly called the Eight Limbs of Yoga:
- Yama (moral discipline)
- Niyama (observances)
- Asana (physical postures – yoga)
- Pranayama (breathing techniques)
- Pratyahara (withdrawal from our senses)
- Dharana (concentration)
- Dhyana (absorption or meditation)
- Samadhi (enlightenment or bliss)
I know this can sound rather heavy and all you are wishing for is some physical movement to ease up the body and mind …. I promise the weaving of the philosophy will remain “light” and easy and the classes will not feel any different… they will just have a light focus gently woven through them to enhance growth and wisdom.
Overall the word yoga means union and of course that is what we love about our practice, the sense of unifying mind, body and soul along with the unity with the world and the community we create with each other in our classes, and every day life
I look forward to seeing you in our new term of classes as always….. and meanwhile please contact me if you have any questions …or make your payment to book your place for the next half term ..
